Network Fiber Technician / Fiber Splicer

About the Role:

Network Fiber Technician will be assigned job functions related to the installation and maintenance of the company’s broadband network primarily as it relates to the fiber network, including the splicing, and troubleshooting of fiber optic cable. Network Fiber Technicians will splice, troubleshoot, install and maintain equipment essential to the broadband network and will be required to be part of an on-call rotation.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform an assortment of tasks required to make cross-connects on fiber distribution frames and testing of fiber optic cables, using OTDR (optical time-domain reflectometers) and Power meter and Source
  • Perform an assortment of tasks to install, and maintain equipment of the fiber broadband network.
  • Perform an assortment of tasks associated with fiber optic splicing, including fusion splicing and splice closure preparation during approved times or maintenance windows.
  • Locate underground fiber-optic cables
  • Perform record-keeping tasks associated with daily activities, including material usage forms and other plant maintenance forms.
  • Perform tasks associated with splicing cut sheets and splicing diagrams.
  • Perform an assortment of tasks related to preventive maintenance of the fiber network (aerial and underground), including performing regular inspections of fiber paths, removing trees, rehanging splice closures and snowshoes, etc
  • Maintains buildings and grounds to ensure they are safe, presentable, and in good working order.
  • Operate bucket truck safety, climb ladders, and operate other equipment using safe practices.
  • Perform minor preventative maintenance on vehicles assigned to the employee. These tasks include checking and adding oil in the engine, antifreeze/coolant in the engine, water in the battery, windshield washer liquid, and air in the tires.
  • All other job duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • GED or High School diploma required.
  • Fiber splicing overview training that includes sending light over fiber and knowledge and use of optical time domain reflectometers (OTDRs), basic networking training, basic fiber training, and fusion splicing and OTDR experience preferred.
  • Skill in operating personal computer, MS Office products smart phone and various software packages and Web-bases products.
  • Skilled in basic electricity and electronics.
  • Skilled in basic knowledge of computer programs.
  • Skilled in basic safety principles.
  • Skilled in problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees across departments courteously and professionally.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects.

Physical Requirements:

Heavy work: Lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. A job is in this category requires a good deal of walking, standing, and sitting with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. If someone can do heavy work, we determine that he or she can also do medium, light, and sedentary work. This position requires the ability to effectively see and hear the majority of the time.
