Drafter

Department: Operations
Location: Columbus, OH

Please note: This is a Mostly Remote Position based out of Columbus, Ohio which may require on-site visits in addition to remote work.

About the Role:

Responds to field engineering requests from various sources including zone supervisors, engineering supervisors, engineering managers, outside developers or government agencies by developing construction work orders and job prints necessary for construction projects.

Develops, maintains, and updates plant records as necessary. Creates and maintains the digital mapping databases used by Horizon including 3-GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, NISC-iVue, and other mapping programs. Assists in successful deployment of services for installation and construction projects.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Coordinates activities and assists the construction crews with construction projects. Prepares maps, diagrams, and drawings for installation and construction routes with appropriate identification of cable types and placement locations, pedestal placement locations, road crossing locations, etc. Consults with, when practical and possible, the construction crew leaders on the feasibility of proposed routes and procedures while in the design stage of individual projects. Assembles and enters mapping information into various digital mapping programs.
  • Prepares drafts and sketches. Generates staking sheets with as much detail as necessary for the construction crews to perform the work described.
  • Plan with other departments to develop a common understanding of network design. Consult with the originator of the engineering request to ensure clarity of request.
  • Communicate on a daily basis with construction crews assigned to projects in the engineer’s area of assignment by proactive contact with (preferably) or by timely response to a crew leader’s request for information.
  • Research for records by going through existing files, cable files, and courthouse files.
  • Assist in completion of company goals and objectives and “Fiber Services Installations/On Time Delivery.”
  • Co-ordinate and ensure proper utility locating has occurred by contacting OUPS and/or other utilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree in the field of Engineering, Drafting, Geography, or G.I.S. or two years previous engineering-drafting and design experience, required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Drafting, Geography, or G.I.S., preferred
  • Previous Telcom drafting and design experience, preferred.
  • Skilled in drafting or drawing including knowledge of Visio, MapCom, 3-GIS, AutoCAD.
  • Skilled in operating personal computer, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and various software packages.
  • Skilled in complex Geo-databases, IT Skills, Problem Solving, Detail oriented.
  • Ability to communicate with employees and various business contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inferences, ratios, proportions, percentages, and fractions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of the telecommunications industry policies and procedures and basic Telcom Standards.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and principles.

Physical Requirements:

Medium work: Lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds, and/or up to 10 pounds of force regularly to move objects. A job is in this category requires a good deal of walking, standing and sitting with some pushing and pulling of arm or leg controls. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. This position requires the ability to effectively see and hear the majority of the time.
